The taliban is a Muslim fundamentalist group and are supposedly "Students of Islamic Knowledge". They are notorious for their horrible treatment of women, and are allied with Al quaeda.
Al quaeda is an international alliance of militant terrorist organizations that was established by Osama bin Laden.

The reason why the Taliban opress women is because they feel that that is what the sciptures are telling them to do. But I am not sure if there are other motives behind their actions. Maybe there other reasons for the way they do things. And I am not too sure what the difference between the Taliban and Al qaeda is but what the others have said sound right.

The Taliban seem to have a very twisted and misled interpretation of the teachings of Islam. Even as Asmeh said yesterday, it seems like many Muslim scholars have mis-read the role of women in society and their place according to religion. It seems that they are able to achieve their own goals through supressing women, and they are only doing this for their own selfish reasons.

The Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization that is very affiliated with Osama bin Laden. They claimed the responsibility for the attacks of September 11th. They were helped in some ways by the Taliban though I do not know the full connection.

I think the Taliban see women as a distraction. Which is probably why they made a requirement for women to cover themselves completely from head to toe with a chadri.
